Over 40 years of metal’s biological urge (and a hefty lack of restraint) has resulted in some incomprehensibly large catalogs. No one should have to listen to anywhere from 13 to 15 [Luca Turilli’s] Rhapsody [of Fire] albums ever just to get caught up for a new release. So each week (as required and/or able), we’re offering a selection of prime(r)(er) cuts to get you up to speed. Without further ado, welcome to…
”How do you define an artist in a short playlist? That’s a difficult question with an answer that will be missing someone’s favorite song or defining moment, lest I just throw together literally everything Abbath has touched in his musical career. I’m not going to pretend what’s here is the be-all, end-all Abbath primer. Instead, what I’ve done is cultivate thirteen songs that best express what I understand to be the essence of Abbath the musician. To me, that means epic guitar-driven black metal heavily influenced by the soaring, consonant melodies of classic metal and delivered with inimitable rock n’ roll swagger that can only come from an outsized musical personality. Many will notice that I’ve neglected some Immortal records entirely, and that’s not due to a distaste for them or anything of the sort – I’ve just come to my understanding of Abbath through certain records and hold them dear. In sum, when I think Abbath, these thirteen tunes come to mind. I hope you enjoy this humble playlist while we wait for Outstrider to drop on July 5th.”

We’re all about equality at AMG Inc. Our legal department says we have to be, and it keeps the bowels of this place running smoothly. One person gets a playlist, then everyone wants a one, and soon there’s blood in the water cooler. So have it your way, animals. Everyone gets a playlist. An oh so brief playlist. Trust me, it’s for the best.
