Angry Metal Primer – My Dying Bride

Over 40 years of metal’s biological urge (and a hefty lack of restraint) has resulted in some incomprehensibly large catalogs. No one should have to listen to anywhere from 13 to 15 [Luca Turilli’s] Rhapsody [of Fire] albums just to get caught up for a new release. So each week (as required and/or able), we’re offering a selection of prime(r)(er) cuts to get you up to speed. Without further ado, welcome to…

“It’s difficult to get the somber, downtrodden, and utterly heartbreaking sounds of gothic doom just right. Somehow, though, British doom heroes (and heroine) My Dying Bride make it look effortless. For 30 years and 13 albums, the Halifax sextet has weaved songs of darkness, spoken words of light, and leveled the world over with their twin guitar melodies, oppressive riffs, somber violins, entrancing keyboard motifs, and the anguished cries and cavernous guttural roars of passionate frontman Aaron Stainthorpe. With their fourteenth full-length album, The Ghost of Orion, set to drop on March 6th, now’s a good time to dive deep into their catalog of sorrowful tales from their past. Seeing as how there’s a wealth of great songs to choose from, coming up with this list wasn’t easy, but I hope this playlist gives you a rough idea as to the many moods of My Dying Bride if you’ve never listened to them before, and may it bring back great memories if you’ve already enjoyed (and loved) their music. Cheers!”
