Angry Metal Primer – Pain of Salvation

Over 40 years of metal’s biological urge (and a hefty lack of restraint) has resulted in some incomprehensibly large catalogs. No one should have to listen to anywhere from 13 to 15 [Luca Turilli’s] Rhapsody [of Fire] albums just to get caught up for a new release. So whenever the fancy strikes us, we’re offering a selection of prime(r)(er) cuts to get you up to speed. Without further ado, welcome to…

Pain of Salvation 01

“For nearly 25 years now, Sweden’s Pain of Salvation have been dropping album after mostly quality album in fairly regular succession. They have also been evolving and refining their sound and style over the years, moving from Dream Theater and Faith No More influences into 70s blues-rock combined with prog and more. Of their previous nine studio albums (I don’t count 2014’s acoustic Falling Home), four are must-owns, several more are solid prog entries, and a couple can be left on the side of the road.

Despite all this, the band is most famous around these parts for the notorious “sweaty man-bun” side banners of early 2017. Like it or not, the band is back this week with Panther. Are we going to be stuck staring at Daniel Gildenlöw’s ripped and sweaty torso for another month? I won’t spoil it for you. Instead, spend some time drifting back in their catalog with a selection of songs from each album.”
