AngryMetalDays 2022: The Resurrection

We’re less than 3 months into 2022 and it has been a fucking rollercoaster. I can’t speak for everyone’s perspective, but here in the Netherlands, we started off still in full-blown lockdown, eased into the warm bath of gradual reopening of society, only to get hit with the cold shower of a European war. I could sure use a big relaxing holiday after this utter madness, and what better way than a week of alternating between floating in a Slovenian mountain river and attending metal shows? If this sounds good to you, then I have great news: I am resurrecting AngryMetalDays!

For those of you who don’t know, AngryMetalDays was a concept originally intended to take place in 2020 at the MetalDays festival in Tolmin, Slovenia, in Europe. The plan was to gather a bunch of readers and writers from AMG and form a cozy little tent conglomeration at the campsite. If you’ve ever been to a metal festival that included a campsite, you know exactly what I mean. One of those little islands in the sea of tents with a shared space in the center, where everyone pitches in tables, seats, party tents, stoves and anything else that makes the festival experience a more joyful and communal one.

We all know what happened in 2020. If you don’t, congratulations on awakening from your coma! Not sure why you decided to read AMG before calling the nurse, but you’ll probably want to do that now. For everyone else, 2020 and subsequently 2021 fell through for obvious reasons, but with the pandemic moving into an endemic phase, vaccines and boosters easily available, and anti-viral medication becoming gradually more commonplace, it looks like this year will finally be the year. Maybe the nukes will start flying tomorrow, or covid mutates into Captain Trips next week, but to quote Nick Fury, until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.

So what’s the situation?
For the 2020 edition, we had 17 attendees confirmed including myself, most of which had tickets. Those tickets are still valid, so everyone who was planning to come in 2020 is still more than welcome! I will be taking stock of who is still on, and I’m hoping we’ll have few to no cancellations. Unfortunately due to the ongoing roadwork constructing a bypass that no one wanted, the festival’s been forced to make some changes, which include no group camping, so we’ll have to try and wrangle together a communal area the old-fashioned way. There are less than 2000 tickets available, so the sooner you make up your mind the better, but the resale market is also quite active, so there are options. Tickets are a little more expensive than in 2020 (which makes sense considering inflation and the pandemic), but €225 is still very cheap for a festival of this duration.

If you want to join, follow this link to buy your ticket, and go here to join the group! The forum is intended as the primary method of communication for planning, gathering information on available materials, traveling together and more.

I’d like to add that this is very much a project in motion. It may surprise you that I have little experience organizing something of this size, and all the help I can get from fellow participants is appreciated. Some things will be messy. Since 2020, time has become more limited, there are more uncertainties, and some things that were clear as day before may be absent or unclear now. But one thing is for certain: AngryMetalDays 2022 will be an unforgettable experience. So join in! And if you have any further questions, I will be stalking the comment section like a hawk to try and answer them, and the festival page has an extensive ABC page that has most of the info for campsite rules and travel information. I hope to see you there!
