I’ve held a special place in my heart for Devangelic, of course, as one craves banging one’s head into a wall periodically, but the massiveness of the artwork is the best representation of this Italian quartet. While the reach exceeded the grasp in the concept albums of years past in the Anunnaki reverence of Ersetu and Dante’s Inferno-inspired Phlegethon, third album Xul keeps things simple. While the Sumerian theme of Ersetu spills across, the emphasis is brutalizing. And brutalizing, as mother always said, is best.” There is no Dear Hollow, only Xul.

I was introduced to the Austin act with sophomore effort Extinguish the Light, which was intense and burning for its time – same with its follow-up. Whether it be the moniker or album title, the cover art, or the fire that the quintet injects into its sound, Ritual of Homicide is incendiary. That’s not to say bands can’t pull it off, but the mangled vocals and chaotic nature of the genre work against attempts to tell a story across the length of a record. Most of the more successful death metal concept albums take musical cues from progressive rock—distinctive melodies, varied pacing, and tamed growls get the point across. Devangelic rally against this, writing concept albums that contain none of that.” Conceptual brutality.

“In what is sure to be a heart-stopping shock to readers, I’m embarking upon a mid-length review of a brutal death metal album from Italy that I’m not terribly fond of. Gasp and swoon though you may, if you survey recent examples of Italian brutal death metal reviewed in this august publication, the Kronos name is not too thick in the ground, and that’s intentional. I’m a devout opponent of the style of brutal death pioneered by Hour of Penance and copied by so many of their Mediterranean peers and do my best to avoid reviewing death bands who play in the style simply because it’s a lose-lose situation.” Death in Venice (or nearby).
